Since the age of 15, an estimated eight million Australians (41%) of legal drinking age and older have been physically or sexually assaulted. According to statistics, 43% of males and 39% of females have been victims of physical or sexual abuse.

Women in Australia are more likely to be abused by a partner
- Compared to men, who are 1 in 16, 1 in 6 women are victims of either physical or sexual abuse in a current or past relationship.
- Domestic abuse victims identified the perpetrator as male 75% of the time and female 25% of the time.
- In total, 1 in 5 females and 1 in 20 males have been victims of sexual assault.3
Causes of homelessness include domestic and family violence
- In 2021–2022, more than 72,900 people sought assistance from specialized homeless services, with domestic violence being the leading cause.
- 2021–2022, 108,000 (or 39%) of those who sought assistance from specialized homelessness programs had been victims of domestic and familial violence.
Many people have grown up with memories of domestic and family violence
- Before the age of 15, 1 in 6 women and 1 in 9 men experience physical or sexual abuse. Of the 418,000 women and 92,200 men who had experienced violence from a former relationship, 92,200 reported that the children in their care had seen the violence.
- More than 2.5 million Australian adults (13%) have experienced abuse as children; most of these victims knew the abuser and had repeated occurrences.
Family violence is worse in communities of Aboriginal people
- Distinct social and cultural groups were 32 times more likely to be hospitalized in family violence than non-Indigenous people.
- Family violence affected the majority of Indigenous assault victims reported to police in 2017, ranging from 64% in New South Wales to 74% in the Northern Territory (3,900).
Physical or sexual violence is more likely to occur against people with disabilities
- Compared to those without disabilities, those with disabilities were 1.8 times more likely to have been the victims of physical or sexual abuse by a partner in the previous year.
- Since they turned 15, people with disabilities were 1.7 times more likely to have been the victims of sexual violence (including assault and threats).
