“Amidst the 122,494 individuals experiencing homelessness in Australia in 2021”, the following findings emerged:

Living Conditions

  • Approximately two in five (39.1%) individuals were residing in ‘severely’ crowded dwellings, reflecting a significant housing scarcity and overcrowding issue.
  • One in five (19.8%) people found refuge in supported accommodation specifically designed for the homeless.
  • An additional one in six (18.1%) individuals sought shelter in boarding houses, indicating a noteworthy reliance on these establishments.

Trends from 2016 to 2021

  • Notable changes occurred within the period of 2016 to 2021 regarding temporary accommodation options
  • A substantial 26.5% increase was observed in the number of individuals living in boarding houses

  • Conversely, there was a 6.9% decrease in the population living in improvised dwellings, tents, or sleeping out.
  • Similarly, a 6.3% decrease was noted in individuals residing in ‘severely’ crowded dwellings.

Factors Influencing the Trends

  • Decline in people living in improvised dwellings, tents, or sleeping out and the rise in alternative temporary accommodations may be partially attributed to measures implemented by local and state governments in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • The increase in individuals living in boarding houses and other temporary lodgings can also be attributed to enhancements in data quality facilitated by the increased utilization of administrative data.

These insights underscore the urgent need to address the challenges surrounding homelessness and inadequate temporary accommodation in Australia. At Reach Services, we are dedicated to making a positive impact by providing comprehensive support, innovative solutions, and initiatives aimed at combatting homelessness and ensuring individuals have access to secure and sustainable housing options.
